Old Iraqi Army

The Iraqi government has started to recruit officers from the old Iraqi army. I think this is a great step forward. I know why the old Iraqi army was disbanded. Basically the neocons wanted to construct a brand new country with brand new unblemished security forces that did not have a history of committing crimes. The idea was to create institutions the same as what we have in the West and see if there is some reason why the Iraqis couldn't have a functional democracy. The experiment was a success - Iraqi democracy is indeed possible. But now that we know that, it is time to bring the Sunnis in from the cold. And recruiting officers from the old army is the way to do that.

News Sources

I prefer to get my news from BBC News and get analysis from Strategy Page. While the BBC is a bit left-wing in its reports, it doesn't fabricate the stories and I'm used to just reading the facts and ignoring the left-wing opinion. It also doesn't get bogged down in mundane machinations of the US. I think getting the news online instead of from TV is helpful because it means I can ignore news stories that have no military effect, such as natural disasters. I'm only interested in news related to geostrategy.

I also get news and analysis from the right-wing Iraqi blogs Iraq the Model and A Free Iraqi and The Mesopotomian. I get my Afghan news and analysis from Afghan Warrior.

NATO Juggernaut

From the NATO map you can see that NATO's tentacles are spread far and wide. I hope that NATO will eventually reach places such as Thailand and Australia. Beyond that, I hope that the entire world ends up joining NATO and we can rename "NATO" to "UN". Note that NATO is predominantly a DEFENSIVE alliance, so the fact that every member country has veto power over offensive operations is not a problem. It hopefully makes countries like Russia and China less worried about this massive military power on their doorstep. NATO is already on Russia's doorstep, and if Afghanistan joins NATO, then NATO will be on China's doorstep also. For us to have a land bridge to Afghanistan, we just need Iran toppled. Iran is the lynchpin in so many ways. Let's just hope they keep their nuclear program going so that the US will be goaded into action. I'd hate to see this country remain in its current state.

The Bomb

There was a time when the left-wing went around screaming for an end to nuclear bombs. Of course they only wanted OUR bombs eliminated so that the commies would win World War 3. Well, we need to remind people of the dangers of nuclear bombs. There is nothing more important than ensuring our ideological enemies such as Iran do not gain these weapons. Also, even if the Iranians don't use nukes as a terrorist weapon, the fact that they have these weapons will make them immune to toppling, regardless of the level of atrocities that they are committing against "their" own people. If I had it my way, every country in the world would be able to be liberated by a coalition of NATO members. Even America.

If the unthinkable happened and the US had a military coup somehow succeed, I would like to know that the other 25 members of NATO would have sufficient air power such that they could provide air cover to defecting US troops so that they can be helped to victory similar to how the Northern Alliance was. But no-one is going to liberate the US if it is hiding behind a nuclear shield. We are very lucky that the good guys are on track to win World War 4. We are very lucky that the forces of freedom are so strong. The world would look very different if the US just so happened to have a dictator like Saddam in power. We need to safeguard freedom as much as possible. We need to snuff out every possibility of the free world being endangered and losing what we have already achieved.

France on Fire

France has failed to integrate its Muslim immigrants into French society. This has now come to the boiling point in the form of riots and arson. To solve this problem you really need to fix the country of origin. It is normal when immigrants enter a new country for them to glorify the country that they just came from. When I was living in the UK there was a free magazine called "The Southern Cross". It was written by Australians for Australians. And the anti-UK bile that was in there made me want to deport all Australians back to the allegedly glorious place where we came from. So too the French will be wishing they could deport all these foreigners. But the best way to fix the problem is to get the country of origin brought into the 21st century instead of being stuck in the 7th century. This will hopefully be part of the War on Terror.

Haiti is a basket-case of a country. It's what happens when you let uneducated people vote. They don't vote for a rational government, they vote for whoever promises to steal the most goodies from "the rich". Rather than watching children burn themselves with matches, Haiti should become a French, Canadian or UN colony until such time as a middle class actually exists and democracy actually has a hope of working. We should not just sit back and watch disaster after disaster occurring.
